INTRODUCTION
Some children have difficulty reading words automatically because they do not possess strategies in making letter-sound associations. Thus, a care program, as an intervention, is a way that self-made instructional materials were introduced to improve the reading skills of the 68-non-reader grade two to five pupils of Central Malamote Elementary School.
METHODS
Purposive sampling was utilized in this study. All non-readers of the grade two to five pupils were the respondents of the study. The data was gathered through the weekly assessment of the non-readers. The researcher provided a self-made instrument/instructional material that will be utilized in gathering the data of the progress of the respondents. Tabulation of the data was done after the whole duration of the intervention. Data were analyzed through simple statistic computation. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, was used for summarizing quantitative data.
RESULTS
Result of the research shows that the majority of the pupils can identify the letters a, e, i, o, u completely but can't produce the sounds completely. Likewise, the same result was reflected in terms of the reading of kartilya a-u. However, when self-made instructional materials were used, results indicate that the majority of the pupils can already produce sounds completely and was able to read all the kartilya a-u. Furthermore, results reflected that the level of performance of the pupils in the post-reading assessment of phonetic blending 1, 2, and 3 syllables was very high which shows that the care program has significantly improved the reading skills of the pupils from grades two to five.
DISCUSSIONS
Lack of phonemic awareness will cause a reading failure to the pupils. The researcher found out that the respondents were not aware of the sounding of the letters. Reading teachers must know that the letter-sound acquisition is the foundation of the complexity of other literacy skills that includes reading, writing, and spelling.
Learning to read is one of the most important achievements of the pupils in school because reading plays a vital role in our everyday life. However, with the results presented in this study, it is very clear that the care program can improve the reading skills of grade two to five pupils.
