Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Bullying is one of the most common problems we are facing nowadays. It can possibly ruin a young person's well-being. Moreover, bullying is a kind of violence that may bring many effects to an individual, particularly to his or her academic performance. This study explored the relationship between bullying and the academic performance of bullied students of Saguday National High School.

METHODS

A descriptive correlational quantitative design was used in this study. Fifty junior high school students at Saguday National High School served as the respondents of this study. To determine the profile of the respondents, frequency and percent were used. To determine the academic achievement of Grade 10 students for the first quarter, the mean was computed. To determine the relationship between bullying and academic achievement, Pearson r was utilized.

RESULTS

The respondents were dominated by females who were 15 years old. The study revealed that the respondents were usually bullied verbally. With this experience, bullied students cannot participate well in class, cannot think well during recitation, lack quality friendships at school, and experience physical illness like headache, stomachache, etc. and mood changes immediately. Furthermore, the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between bullying and academic performance of Grade 10 students.

DISCUSSIONS

These findings indicate that bullying affects the academic performance of the students. With this, teachers and administrators need to strengthen awareness about the effects of bullying in many areas of life. Students, especially to those who had been bullied, must share their experiences with the authorities for immediate action. Parents should also conduct daily consultation with their children.
