Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Education has formed a Technical Vocational unit in the Bureau of Secondary Education. Technology and Livelihood Education subjects in junior high school follow the rules of TESDA. Our school offers two courses that students can choose from in 9th grade and pursue in 10th grade: Information Communication and Technology and the Cookery. This allows the student to get at least a National Certificate Level I or II based on the TLE course chosen. The main purpose of this research is to empower the level of interest of Grade 10 Cookery students leading to get a National Certification II.

METHODS

The researchers used quantitative method to evaluate the level of satisfaction and the level of understanding of the students to the core competencies in cooking that was needed for the assessment of National Certificate II, reflecting the figures from the survey. The survey was created by the researchers. Purposive sampling technique was used in the selection of the participants. Institutional assessment by the researchers was used in conducting the intervention.

RESULTS

The following are evident: 1) the data gathered showed most of the respondents were extremely satisfied with their level of understanding of the competencies in cooking needed for the assessment of NC II, 2) it was found that more than half of the respondents were extremely satisfied with different activities and strategies conducted with regards to the core competencies in cooking, and 3) most of the students of G10 Cookery have high interest in getting the assessment of NC II

DISCUSSIONS

Institutional Assessment is most likely practice to National Certification. It is the actual performance of the learners, applying their knowledge and skills in their specialization in TLE. Conducting a Seminar for Grade 10 students to empower and knowing the importance of National Certification for a better future is necessary. In this program, students will appreciate the National Certificate through the messages and lectures of the speaker. Here, they will discuss the uses of the certificate, especially in competitive entrepreneurship not only in the Philippines but also in other countries. This program includes orientation about the importance of National Certificate II, organizing seminars and workshops through video presentations and inviting resource speakers and conducting an institutional assessment for Grade 10 TLE-Cookery students to make them knowledgeable and skilled in acquiring the National Certificate II.
