Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Self-efficacy is an important aspect of students' academic performance. When self-efficacy is high, students are confident that they will perform well in a test. This happens when they successfully master the concepts in a given quarter or unit. This study showed the influence of the innovation, "Big Bang Quiz Bee," to the self-efficacy of Grade 11 students. The game's objective is to review the competencies in a quarter using a question and answer strategy. What made this innovation unique is the use of the "Game Changer Cards" or the Power-ups for the students to win the game.

METHODS

A two-part survey questionnaire was given to identify the influence of the game to student's self-efficacy (first part) and to determine their perceptions towards the game (second part). The responses in both parts were analyzed using descriptive statistics and were collated using an affinity diagram respectively. Moreover, pre-test and post-test were analyzed using a Two Sample Mean T-test to determine the significant difference between the mean scores garnered by the respondents of the study.

RESULTS

The average self-efficacy of the students is 4.28, this showed a high level of self-efficacy which means the students are confident that they can perform well in a test in Earth Science. The test statistics for the pre-test and post-test gained a p-value of 2.91E-20 which is less than 0.05 level of significance, therefore the researcher has enough evidence to say that there is a significant difference between the test results.

The perceptions of the students were successfully analyzed and summarized. Most of the students gave their positive insights such as the game is very unique because the cards added twists, it was challenging and exciting at the same time, they learned while having fun, it is an interactive and strategic game, and decision-making and collaborative skills were improved because of the bond created between the group members. Few respondents mentioned that they tend to focus on a winning strategy rather than learning and some game changer cards were overpowered.

DISCUSSIONS

Based on the results, Big Bang Quiz Bee turned out to be an effective tool for teachers to employ in classes as it poses learning while having fun and brings about mastery of learning competencies. With this, Grade 11 student's self-efficacy in Earth Science remarkably increased. This strategy can be used across learning areas although it still needs to be improved for better implementation.
