Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Being a Math-think-nik pupil is a result of so many factors put together and worked towards the ability to answer math problems. However, being very good in Mathematics is not achieved overnight. A conglomeration of factors that either goes well with other factors or clashes with some has something to do with mathematics achievement. The researcher has observed that most of the Grade 6 pupils have difficulty in Mathematics while a small group displayed a positive outcome in Mathematics. The researcher decided to determine the factors that affect the mathematical abilities of her Grade 6 class. It is in this context that the researcher embarked on undertaking a study that would explain the factors that affect the mathematical abilities of pupils since understanding these variables may lead to better teaching and better learning. The involvement of parents and families in their children's education is critical to students' academic success not just in school but throughout life. The three R's to effective partnerships were respect, responsibility, and relationships. (Office of Student Services Collaborative Family-School Relationships for Children's Learning Beliefs Practices: 2015).

METHODS

The researcher used the descriptive method of research. Descriptive research involves describing, analyzing and interpreting certain conditions which are existing at the time that a study is conducted. The random sampling technique called the fishbowl was used. Eighty-six (86) Grade 6 pupils became respondents and their names were drawn afterward.

RESULTS

The result of the study was based on the three tables of the questionnaire given to the respondents. The first table says that it was clear that pupils of Gregorio Paradero Elementary School had a positive perception of Mathematics as a subject and what it can do to alter the lives of pupils. The next table recognized teaching strategies and materials, attitudes and parental involvement as factors considering the high weighted mean scores of the indicators. The last table can be deduced that pupils have been aware of the good and bad effects of the factors in Mathematics learning.

DISCUSSIONS

The results of the study determined what action should be done by the researcher and the administration involved in the study. An action plan in Mathematics learning was proposed after the research. Also, with this research, other institution can gain benefits from using the results of this study in solving similar problems in their school.
