Basic Sentence Construction Skills Development of Grade Four Pupils at Sampa-Pacifico Elementary School

INTRODUCTION
Writing is one of the four basic skills. Writing skills are more complicated than other language skills. Sentence construction skills are an essential element for students' academic success. The grade four pupils were evaluated and found with a poor level of sentence construction skills. This action research dealt with the importance of well-structured instructional material to develop the basic sentence construction skills of the learners.
METHODS
The method of gathering the data and analysis plan was presented. The respondents were forty-nine grade four pupils. Questionnaires were also prepared which were administered to the subjects of the study at Sampa-Pacifico Elementary School.
RESULTS
Respondents are evaluated based on the results of the written test in sentence organization, sentence construction using pictures, and grammar and usage. In sentence organization, twenty-five or fifty percent of the pupils were at the poor levels and only two or four percent was at the very good level. The result of sentence construction using picture was thirty or sixty percent at the poor level and only two or four percent were at the very good level. The data implied that the majority of the respondents were also poor in grammar and usage, with thirty-three or sixty-seven percent at poor levels. On the whole, it was safe to conclude that the majority of the grade four pupils are in the poor level in basic sentence construction skill.
DISCUSSIONS
The result of this study revealed that the pupils can arrange jumbled words, phrases, make a sentence using the picture and construct sentences using correct grammar through the use of well-structured instructional material. All pupils, particularly the grade four pupils, should improve their writing skills which, then, can boost their studies.
