Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Computer literacy is defined as the skills and knowledge of an individual about computers. One factor for improving learning is the fact that technology is becoming such an integral part of our everyday world. Most jobs today require some type of technology use. Also, students and adults are using technology on a daily basis to communicate and get information in multiple ways. The prevalent daily use of technology in people's lives overall makes the use of technology very relevant to the students and provides a connection that will greatly benefit student learning.

METHODS

Through quantitative features, the proponents evaluated the extent of knowledge and the common problems being encountered by 40 Grade 12 Information and Communications Technology students of Fernando Air Base Integrated National High School. The researchers gathered the data via survey questionnaires and practical assessment. There was an equal number of respondents from Grade 12 ICT Humility and Compassion.

RESULTS

The extent of knowledge of the respondents in hardware and software was measured. Furthermore, it was found out that the student-respondents could open a computer instead of using shortcut keys in terms of hardware knowledge. Student-respondents were likely to create a document efficiently but had a hard time following certain commands. Grade 12 Humility got the total score of 18.65 for the hardware examination while Grade 12 Compassion got a score of 19.30 over the total score of 25. In the same scenario, Grade 12 Compassion’s extent of knowledge in software was greater by 1 to Grade 12 Humility's score. Grade 12 Humility gained the score of 17.65 while Grade 12 Compassion gained 18.70 in the assessment for software. Both sections could use a computer but they were not familiar with specific shortcut keys.

DISCUSSIONS

Out of these results, the proponents of the study concluded that students had basic knowledge using computers but enhancement still needs to be made. Thus, the proponents proposed a remedial program and buddy system to further improve the skills of the students both in hardware and software.
