Awareness of Grade 7 Students of Ettmnhs with Regards to Earthquake Safety

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Earthquake is one of the natural disasters that can kill people's lives. No one can predict when or when an earthquake could happen. Hence, awareness of earthquake safety tips is important to avoid or lessen physical damage and harm. This research was conducted to know the level of awareness of grade 7 students in Emiliano Tria Tirona Memorial National High School. The researchers believe that among all the levels of junior high school, grade 7 has less knowledge and information about the topic. This research aims to provide not just knowledge but also awareness not only among grade 7 students but also to the entire Tironian community.

METHODS

The researchers used a descriptive study to determine the Awareness of Grade 7 students at Emiliano Tria Tirona Memorial National High School about earthquake safety. Moreover, probability sampling was utilized in the study where 143 respondents were included. Respondents were selected through simple random sampling. Using the Survey Questionnaire, the researchers gathered the needed to find out the level of awareness of the respondents.

RESULTS

The Grade 7 students that participated in the study aged 14-20 is 23 or16.08% and 120 or 83.91% for the students aged 11-13. Most of the students are very aware of the basic earthquake safety tips like Drop, Cover and Hold (88.11 %). Using a survey questionnaire, the researchers found out that there are students that have less knowledge of the different earthquake safety tips. Overall, the numbers of the students that are very aware are higher than the students that are less and not aware.

DISCUSSIONS

The results demonstrate that the program regarding earthquake safety will provide knowledge and awareness because there are still a number of students that do not have sufficient knowledge regarding the topic. It will give the students additional awareness and understanding of what they must do if an earthquake happens. This program could be proposed and held in the school or in their community. Moreover, these may come in the form of earthquake drills or seminars that include different earthquake safety procedures. The abovementioned programs are necessary to increase the level of awareness of the Grade 7 students in Emiliano Tria Tirona Memorial National High School.
