Awareness in Usage of Recycled Life Vest in Surviving Pupils in Times of Calamities at Ovidio Dela Rosa Elementary School

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

As we are approaching towards global warming and climate change, we continuously experience different calamities in our community. One of these is a flood that can cause severe damage to our properties, environment and even the loss of lives. The school, as a second home for our pupils, should be equipped with materials and tools that will be used in times of calamities. Since Cavite City is surrounded by bodies of water, it is prone to storm surge and flood. One of the resources that can be used is a personal floating device which is also known as a life vest.

METHODS

The descriptive method was utilized to portray the probable conditions of pupils in times of calamities. Its common means for obtaining information include the use of questionnaire, interviews, and observations. The target population of the study is composed of 79 selected pupils in grade 4 in Ovidio Dela Rosa Elementary School for the S.Y 2018-2019. To acquire the information required, the researchers used survey questionnaires to the selected Grade 4 pupil participants. The questions were based on the research questions stated in the study. The survey questionnaire in checklist form was the main data-gathering instrument for this study. Subjects were selected because of their convenient accessibility and proximity to the researchers.

RESULTS

The results of the study were exhibited in tabular form and were expounded by the researcher. Table 1. shows the distribution of the participants according to how important the life vest is. The response Yes got the highest frequency of 68, equivalent to 86.1 percent. This was followed by those who answered No having a frequency of 11, comprising 13.9 percent. It shows that more pupils know the importance of the life vest.

DISCUSSIONS

The study reveals that if the pupils use the Recycled Life Vest Tool, there is a high possibility that children can survive on their own when a flood occurs. By knowing the importance of this vest, all pupils made their own Recycled Life Vest and some of them kept them in their house. While we are in the world that experience climate change and we cannot predict what will happen in the future, it is so important that we are prepared or ready for these water calamities and this life vest can be used to save lives.
