Abstract

INTRODUCTION

One of the most remarkable reform in the educational system in the Philippines the K to 12 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, a revision of the curriculum that is adaptable to the global community at large. One of the partners in this change is the teachers who will implement the curriculum him/herself. Thus, this study aims to review and measure the importance of the Innovative Teaching Strategies using the Authentic Teaching Materials (ATM) during the School Year 2018-2019 of Grade 10 students of Lopez National Comprehensive High School, Hondagua National High School, and Jongo National High School in Lopez, Quezon. This further resulted to the development of a Module containing the ATM based on innovative teaching strategies that will help and enhance the teaching and learning of teachers and students in writing, literature, and grammar in Filipino.

METHODS

This study used descriptive -correlational research design, including a non-parametric design using Kendall Tau, to determine the correlation and importance of the Authentic Teaching Materials (ATM) in teaching Filipino based on the Innovative Teaching Strategies to Grade 10 students from the three schools classified as Large, Medium and Small Schools in Lopez, Quezon who responded to a constructed survey questionnaire and served as the focus group. The data collected went through a quantitative analysis. It also used frequency count, percentage, rank, mean, and chi-square test as a statistical tool.

RESULTS

Majority of the students who responded on the survey perceived substantial problems rooted from 1) Time management in the application of the strategies; 2) The teaching and learning environment of learners, and 3) Lack of knowledge of teacher in using strategies and techniques in teaching writing.

DISCUSSIONS

The results demonstrate the need for new and Authentic Teaching Materials that include innovative teaching strategies for teachers. Learning Action Cells (LAC) Sessions that focus on the techniques and innovative strategies in teaching writing need to be regularly conducted. There is also a need to strengthen the usage of Filipino language in teaching and learning Language and Literature.
