Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Listening, like reading, writing, and speaking, plays a big role in English language learning. The difficulties faced among non-native speakers in aural development has placed the listening comprehension level of the learners at stake.

METHODS

The conduct of this study was made to identify the aural comprehension process for determining the areas in listening comprehension needed for enhancement for the Grade 10 students of Mataasnakahoy National High School during the school year 2018-2019. To achieve the purpose, the researcher employs the use of the top-down and bottom-up approaches in improving their listening comprehension. A descriptive method of research utilizing adopted listening for the teacher to determine the adequacy of the aural comprehension processes was used.

RESULTS

The finding on the pre-assessment test, which has a mean of 68.45, has greatly improved as evident in the post-assessment test result which has a mean of 78.11. The p-value of 0.152, which was greater than the 0.05 significance level, indicates that there is no significant difference in the result. It shows that the respondents have thoughts regarding their listening skills as part of their learning process.

DISCUSSIONS

English teachers may give the same attention and importance on the development of listening skills among students as reading, writing and speaking. They may utilize the approaches and propose a strategy for improving the listening comprehension of the learners.
