INTRODUCTION
According to Dearden(2015), there is a fast-moving worldwide shift towards using English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) for academic subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Geography, and Medicine. Despite the spread of English as the universal language, it is not uniform and that is reflected in the differences in levels of proficiency, especially in the students’ capability in using the English language. The Social Weather Station (SWS) in its March 2006 survey said that only three out of ten Filipinos could speak the English language fluently. This may be attributed to the attitudes and anxieties of learners in speaking English. As of now, there are only limited studies regarding the attitudes and anxieties of students towards English as Medium of Instruction (EMI), specifically in GAS and TVL strand students in ETTMNHS-ISHS.
METHODS
The study utilized the systematic sampling wherein the researchers used the formula of n=population size overpopulation sample size in getting the sample size of the respondents. To identify the attitudes and anxieties of the respondents, the researchers used the FLCAS created by Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1986). The questionnaire is distributed to 254 respondents from GAS and TVL students selected via systematic sampling. Factors such as the respondent’s age, socioeconomic status, and academic performance were not considered in the study.
RESULTS
After the process of distributing and collecting the questionnaire and computations, the results were retrieved by the researcher. Through the use of FLCAS, the result stated that the respondents were neutral in their attitudes and anxieties towards English as Medium of Instruction.
DISCUSSIONS
Results from the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale(FLCAS) by Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1986) revealed that the respondents were neutral in their attitudes and anxieties towards English as Medium of Instruction (EMI). It means that some of the respondents had positive attitudes towards English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) and some of them had negative attitudes or anxieties towards English as Medium of Instruction (EMI).
