Abstract

INTRODUCTION

In-service training programs in the past and those underway are indicatives of a pre-occupation in the educational system to update and upgrade the teaching workforce by delivery, evaluation, and research on instruction. The current pre-occupation with instructional methods, techniques, strategies, procedures, aids, approaches, evaluation and research is understandably relevant to the marshaling of the capacity of teachers for better performance. In-service teacher training programs have been widely implemented as a way to improve the quality of education. Educational reform requires teachers not only to update their knowledge and skills but to also totally transform their role as an educator. In-service training helps teachers learn new roles and teaching strategies that will improve pupil achievement. Education and training do not stop when the individual has already attained his degree from his chosen career.

METHODS

The descriptive part of the study includes the perceptions and attitude towards the objective of the in-service education training program. To further understand the descriptive method, the researcher was guided with the definition of Manuel and Medel (2014) who proposed that this method involves the description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition or processes of the phenomena.

RESULTS

All of the respondents were positive towards the in-service training program and they agreed on the important components such as guidelines, materials/devices, trainer’s role performance, and expenses. There is no significant difference in the perceptions of the respondents on the different components of the in-service training program. Majority of the respondents have Very Satisfactory performance rating based on the Individual Performance Commitment Review Form (IPCRF). There is no significant relationship between the performance of the teacher respondents and their attitude towards the components of the in-service program. Based on the study, a training design for School-Based LAC Sessions on K-3 Early Language Literacy and Numeracy should be proposed for effective classroom management.

DISCUSSIONS

Today schools continue to move into a different phase of educational reform. One factor that is consistent in each school plan is the need for the in-service training program.
