INTRODUCTION
Reading is the ability that is essential for pupils' success both in school and throughout life. Record of struggling readers from data for the school year 2016-2017 was really alarming, with 65 out of 95 pupils falling under Frustration Level in English based on their Phil-IRI result. In this fact, the researcher concludes that the pupils need appropriate and urgent solutions to increase their reading test scores and develop meaningful reading experiences. Without a solid foundation in reading, children will struggle with their schooling.
METHODS
Descriptive type of research was used to 30 selected struggling readers from two sections of the Grade Six class. The survey has been done at around 12:00 to 12:30 in the afternoon. Descriptive research is a research design where events are recorded, described, interpreted, analyzed and compared. Its objective is to describe a situation, condition or area of interest systematically, factually and accurately. Descriptive designs include observation, surveys and interviews, standardized tests, and case studies. (Castillo, 2002).
RESULTS
Reading is not the priority of most of the children in the study. Out of 20 questions given to the pupils about their attitude towards reading, 18 questions obtained a "Slightly Upset" result which means that they are not that happy during reading time. They are not comfortable reading out loud in class and reading during weekends or no classes. Only two questions gained "Happiest" for having a book as a present and learning from books. On the second survey about their own perception about reading, it has been revealed that as they heard the word "reading", they got nervous and uncomfortable with it. They read at home but not as often as needed. It indicates that they have more fun reading storybooks with a lot of pictures, comics and other reading materials that gave them entertainment. Although they were aware that reading is what they need to learn, they still choose to play as their favorite hobby. They also think since they are already not good readers, they did not aim to be a good one anymore.
DISCUSSIONS
The results of the study proved that the reading ability of pupils is influenced by factors related to other pupils, school, teachers and home characteristics. If parents guide and teach their children in their reading interests, no pupils will be considered as struggling readers. Follow-up action from parents as well as dedication from teachers are needed to make these pupils good readers in the future.
