Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Education is indeed imperative in the lives of people. It may be acquired from the individual's own ways or by formal schooling wherein the latter is the usual source of learning of almost all. To realize this, educational programs include both curricular or academic activities and extra-class or co-curricular activities. The extra-curricular activities, such as those athletics-related, play a vital role in the academic performance of students, particularly the athletes. Realizing this scenario, the researcher wishes to determine the effects of participation in athletics-related activities on academic performance among students' athletes.

METHODS

The respondents of the study are 52 selected athletes of Wenceslao Trinidad Memorial National High School for the SY 2017-2018. The purposive sampling method was employed. The self-administered survey questionnaire and an informal interview were used in gathering data for the study. A self-constructed semi-structured interview was used for each individual interview. The data will be analyzed and validated. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize the learners' responses. Frequency and Percentage will be used to interpret the table of responses.

RESULTS

Many of the students participate in sports activities than academic-related activities. The computed mean of academic performance of selected athletes reveals that students are still able to get very satisfactory grades even though they are participating in an extra-curricular activity. The selected athletes of Wenceslao Trinidad Memorial National High School assessed and prioritized the value of different athletic-related activities. The respondents' participation in extra-curricular activities, particularly in academics and other related activities, had no significant relationship on their academic performance. However, a significant relationship was observed in the students' participation in sports activities.

DISCUSSIONS
