INTRODUCTION
Poor academic performance is one of the various problems that a teacher encounters as she teaches. Such problems could be attributed to some causes such as social, economic, environmental or psychological factors. Therefore, it is essential to create a captivating, inviting and comfortable place for the pupils to help them cultivate good study habits. It will also provide vital information resources for pupils to develop and sustain good study habits necessary for excellent performance in academic works. Thus, it is imperative for the pupils to cultivate good study habits that will equip them for excellent performance in academic work through the use of a school library and other instructional materials.
METHODS
This study was conducted at Calumala Elementary School, Calumala, Sta. Teresita, Batangas during S.Y. 2017 -2018. It involved eighteen Grade-IV pupils. The research was conducted using questionnaires which were given to pupils by the researcher. The parents of the students were informed about the research. Moreover, the pupils who participated in the research were informed for its purpose and aims. To avoid neutrality and try to locate positive or negative stances from the sample, the answers were coded using a 5-point Likert Scale (Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Very Often and Always) while the data were analyzed descriptively by comparing the frequencies of the answers.
RESULTS
From the data we gathered, most of the pupils answered in studying daily at home and in getting assistance from their parent in studying English subject at home. They answered sometimes in getting information in the library to answer their homework in English.
DISCUSSIONS
Based on the findings, the researchers hereby draw that the pupils walk into their classroom with a wide range of habits for studying English but do not have many positive attitudes for reading and using libraries. They also do not have a high level of literacy in both print and digital media. After a thorough analysis and going through the conclusions and personal observations, the researchers recommended that the teachers should change their teaching strategies from the usual approach, lowering down to catch up with the level of the pupils. There should be a library study hour on the school time table that would enable the pupils to have a specific time to use the school library regularly. School libraries should have an internet connection to enable the pupils to explore the wealth of information resources worldwide.
