Assessment on the Vocabulary Level of Grade 10 Ingenuity Class of Mangagoy National High School: Basis for Intervention

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

English is the universal language used in every transactions and communication all around the world. To achieve global competitiveness, one should be able to use the language. Therefore, adequate vocabulary is indispensable. Hence, interventions for broadening vocabulary are essential to English Language Learners. In this study, the vocabulary level of the grade 10 students of Mangagoy National High School is determined. Through this, an intervention program will be planned for students who have a low vocabulary.

METHODS

In this research, an adopted 30-item vocabulary test from Paul Nation's Vocabulary test was taken by respondents to measure their vocabulary knowledge and size. A descriptive-developmental research design was employed. The scores of the learners were the basis of categorizing them into the following classifications: students who scored 25 -30 are in the independent level, 19-24 are in instructional level, and 18 below belong in frustration level.

RESULTS

It was found out that most of the Grade 10 students belong in frustration level, which indicated that most of the respondents still do not have sufficient vocabulary. The results of the test disclose that 76% of the respondents have poor vocabulary knowledge and learning skills, 21% have good vocabulary knowledge and learning skills but with the aid of the teacher and vocabulary learning strategies, and only 3% can study independently to reach the highest standard. Generally, more than half of Grade 10 Ingenuity class have poor vocabulary knowledge and size.

DISCUSSIONS

Majority of the respondents are in the frustration level and are subject to undertaking an intervention design for vocabulary instruction. The outcome showed the need for the respondents to experience intervention strategies with a meaningful task. The intervention could help ESL teachers provide vocabulary learning activities that could be integrated into regular classes. It could also be utilized for future study to assess its effectiveness.
