Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Educational specialists believe that guidance and counseling is an indispensable part of the educational system towards optimum pupil development. In the schools' desire to help in the reformation and total development of a child, part of the guidance and counseling services had been extended, specifically, to the public school learners. It aims to guide individuals so that they will be socially effective and be able to live individually satisfying lives. In view of this, a look at the guidance and counseling programs being offered in public schools within the Division of Batangas City was the main focus, specifically on improving the total educational program and enhancing the services being rendered to the students. It aims to identify the existence of deficiencies in the guidance program and to achieve the whole rounded development of the learners. A look into these may yield effective means that may encourage students to attend classes often, remain socially effective and individually satisfied while in school. This may eventually lessen the number of absences and drop-out rates.

METHODS

Research DesignThis study made use of descriptive quantitative research design. Participants: The respondents of the study were 99 or 51% Guidance Teachers and 97 or 49% percent School Heads in the whole of Batangas City Division of the School Year 2017-2018.Instrument: A researcher-prepared and validated tool was the study's main instrument.

RESULTS

Findings revealed that majority of the Guidance teachers and School Head-respondents were female, had taken BS in Elementary Education with units in the Graduate degree; had been assigned as Guidance teachers for a period of at least 9 years and below and had attended a minimal number of seminars/training related to Guidance and Counseling. In terms of status, the majority agreed that the services were often available; as to practices, they were often utilized; and as to the extent rendered for the students' development, they were rendered on a great extent.

DISCUSSIONS

To enhance the guidance and counseling services, the findings of this study had been presented in a meeting to update all school heads/guidance designates in Batangas City. It was also recommended that school heads communicate with the higher-ups so that the guidance designates may attend national or regional guidance-related seminars at least once or twice a year. This will ensure that programs and activities can be made better for the benefit of the students.
