Abstract

INTRODUCTION

English, being one of the major subject areas in school, should have a good quality of instruction not only for the improvement of learners but also of the teachers. It is important to assure the effectiveness and efficiency of the teaching of the subject. Evaluating the components of English instructions is a good start for knowing the areas needing development and expansion. This study aimed to assess the different aspects of teaching the subject and to also know the attitude of pupils towards it.

METHODS

The descriptive method of research was used. The respondents of this study were twelve teachers and 280 pupils of Gregorio Agoncillo Elementary School. A survey questionnaire was used as the main instrument to assess the components of English instruction. The data gathered were tallied and tabulated. Statistical tools such as weighted mean and t-test were utilized for the analysis of data.

RESULTS

The gathered data lead to the findings that both teachers and pupils strongly agreed that English Instructions are well-planned with the use of an effective curriculum. In terms of faculty competence, use of instructional materials, learning environment and classroom management, teachers strongly agreed and learners agreed that the aforementioned components were on its best condition. There was a significant difference between the assessments of the respondents in terms of the five components, with the exception of facilities and instructional materials where it resulted in no significant difference.

DISCUSSIONS

The results of the study showed that English instructions are well executed which lead to the learners' improved understanding of the subject. Moreover, pupils also possess a positive attitude towards English which helps them become more motivated in learning the area faster and easier. It is also concluded that respondents have varied experiences when it comes to studying English. With the said conclusions, an action plan was proposed to help expand the strategies used in teaching. This will help teachers in coping with the trends in teaching and learning the subject.
