Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Reading is an essential skill that every learner should love and enhance. It is the most important tool for the total development of learning. The first fundamental step of achieving success in reading is the reading readiness of the pupils. Reading Readiness is the first stage of the readers to start reading from coded words down to the development of reading skills. As a teacher of the beginners, the outcomes of the study will serve as the basis for the preparation of learning/reading materials that will enhance their readiness to read. Focusing on the students’ interests in selecting reading materials may be more beneficial in promoting reading success than focusing on the reading level.

METHODS

Different remedial programs have been conducted and aimed at increasing the interest of the pupils to read. Likewise, the teachers continuously conducted the most appropriate reading interventions. Hence, the teachers employed reading strategies believed to meet the reading interest and capability of the pupils. From the proposed standard oral reading test, the level of reading readiness of the Grade I pupils was determined. Teachers used reading readiness tests to gauge whether children have the prerequisites for learning to read. The assessments were made to evaluate if a child is struggling with pre-reading activities. If problems show up, teachers can focus instruction on the required skills.

RESULTS

It implies that there should be an intervention or activities given to more than half of the population of Grade I learners. It also indicates that Grade I learners require more attention and guidance from the teachers for them to improve their reading abilities. The process of learning to read should be supported by a caring individual. Teachers must acknowledge the indispensability of reading skills. An effective program of reading instruction should focus on promoting a reading culture among children.

DISCUSSIONS

A proposed reading intervention program should be devised to enhance the GradeI pupils’ reading readiness. One way of improving reading readiness is by making reading fun for children. This can be obtainable by providing different learning reading materials that will enhance the reading ability of the children. They will serve as the encouragement by applying different strategies that will gain their interests to achieve the learning and reading readiness goals for every learner.
