Assessment of Leadership Skills of Selected Public Elementary School Heads as Perceived by the Teachers in the Division of Lipa City: Basis for Enhancement Program

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The study was conducted to assess the leadership skills of selected school heads in the Division of Lipa City as perceived by the teachers. In this study, different leadership skills such as interpersonal skills, conceptual skills, technical skills, work value orientation and leadership potentialities of the selected school heads were assessed.

METHODS

This study deals on the assessment of the leadership skills of selected public elementary school heads as perceived by the teachers Division of Lipa City. This study uses descriptive research, a process which depicts the phenomena existing among the respondents of the study. The primary source of information needed for the study is the questionnaire aided by informed interviews and observations. Survey research is a technique used for gathering data by asking questions to respondents and requesting them to answer questions enumerated in the questionnaire. The descriptive research designs enable researchers to describe or present the picture of a phenomenon or phenomena under investigation. It is the opposite of analytical research. The respondents involved in the study were 90 teachers in the Division of Lipa City.

RESULTS

According to the Overall Descriptive Statistics of the assessment of the leadership skills by category, the Interpersonal Skills of the selected school heads has a weighted mean of 3.11, ranked 4th, and with a verbal interpretation of Normally Difficult; the Conceptual Skills has a weighted mean of 3.16, ranked 2nd, and with a verbal interpretation of Normally Difficult; the Technical Skills has a weighted mean of 3.05, ranked 5th, and with a verbal interpretation of Normally Difficult; the Work Value Orientation has a weighted mean of 3.14, ranked 3rd, with a verbal interpretation of Normally Difficult; and the Leadership Potentialities which has a weighted mean of 3.25, ranked 1st, and with a verbal interpretation of Normally Difficult. The overall assessment revealed the 3.14 weighted mean and verbal interpretation of Normally Difficult.

DISCUSSIONS

Based on the assessment, the top three ranked leadership skills on selected public elementary schools heads as perceived by the teachers in the Division of Lipa City are the following: (1) Leadership Potentialities (2) Conceptual Skills, (3) Work Value Orientation. The school principal showed the best practice of their leadership skills as perceived by the respondents from their respected schools. The skills contributed effectively to the teachers’ job and created a good relationship with them in school and the community. Their performance in their work as mentors affect teaching performance.
