Assessment of Character Education Program in Public Elementary Schools in the District of Binangonan II Division of Rizal

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Education is considered as the key to progress and development of an individual. It is a never-ending process which shapes every human being to develop his/her skills, improve his/her habits and attitudes, and enhance his/her social relations. With this, schools are faced with the inevitable responsibility of guiding students during the most crucial period of development. Character education teaches children to value ethical choices and equips them with the tools necessary to recognize those choices. Character education is taught in elementary classrooms through structured, school-wide programs and through the efforts of individual teachers. There is no single best method to address character education. Teachers select one or more techniques to introduce ethical principles to their students. Character education, as a part of the school curriculum, is a process by which values are formed under the guidance of the teacher and as the student interacts with the environment.

METHODS

The study utilized the descriptive survey research design utilizing a questionnaire checklist as a tool in gathering the needed data.

RESULTS

Based on the findings, the majority of the respondents are females with ages 30 years old and above. Most of them are pursuing graduate education and have been in the service for more than 10 years. Teaching methodologies obtained a weighted mean of 4.58 interpreted as outstanding while the other aspects are interpreted very satisfactory. Sex and educational attainment are not significant in the assessment of teachers in Character Education while age and length of service are significant. study concluded that the assessment of teachers in Character Education differs significantly when they are grouped in terms of age and length of service. However, the assessment in terms of sex and educational attainment did not differ significantly.

DISCUSSIONS

The study recommended the teaching of Character Education should be strengthened to attain the set objectives. Pupils should be exposed to more activities for the development of their positive traits and characteristics. The proposed plan of action is recommended for implementation. Parallel studies may be conducted considering other variables.
