Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum of theDepartment of Education is on its progress of producing college-, work-and entrepreneur-ready students. In making students become college-ready, every school ensures that students are equipped with necessary competencies enough to succeed in any academic endeavor. Junior High schools make certain that Grade 10completers are prepared in choosing their career path toward success. Helping the class advisers in monitoring and guiding the academic performance of the students, teacher-counselors should be part of the working process since it is part of their educational service. With this in mind, this study describes the success indicators of Grade 10 students that will guide them academically as they proceed to Senior High School. A guidance plan will also be proposed in lieu of the findings of the study.

METHODS

Descriptive and Correlational research design was utilized and this study was participated by 169 randomly selected students. The success profile instrument developed by George D. A. (n.d.) was used and modified to fit the local condition. This is a holistically structured study which enables the development of different areas of the academic profile, ensuring and guiding the students’ success in life.

RESULTS

The study revealed that students have a high level of academic skills development, study and thinking skills, personal issues, planning for the future and resource needs. Most of the respondents have high-level use of learning styles and personal purpose but with a medium level of speaking skills. It was found out that there is a positive moderate relationship between and among the variables set in the study which imply that the high level of academic skills development observed is due to the moderately high perspective toward the other success indicators of the student.

DISCUSSIONS

The result of the study guides the teacher-counselor to establish the Project AcadLead of the guidance office included in the academic guidance plan. This enables students to be exposed to several activities that could enhance their academic ability specifically in speaking. The open channel of communication is encouraged for teacher-counselors so that students can seek advice in highlighting their academic status toward future career issues and concerns. Lastly, parenting seminars should be continuously done by the school to inform them of the needs of their children in the promotion of academic success.
