Application of Games in Improving Word Recognition in Dolch Basic Sight Words for First Graders at San Felipe Elementary School

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study was to improve the word recognition level of Grade one pupils of San Felipe Elementary School by the end of the first semester. The respondents of this study consisted of seventy (70) Grade One Pupils enrolled at San Felipe Elementary School. The respondents were provided with educational games introducing the Dolch Basic Sight words. In this study, various games were utilized to teach the Dolch basic sight words.

METHODS

To achieve the purpose, the researcher utilized the descriptive method of research. The researcher believes that utilizing the descriptive research helped in understanding the level of the learners' word knowledge in Dolch basic sight words at the beginning of the study until the intervention activity was done.

RESULTS

All the educational games included in this study were carefully selected, taking into consideration the pupil's ability, interest, and safety. In addition to instruction, students were given the opportunity to enjoy the lesson while they are learning.

DISCUSSIONS

The analysis of data revealed that the application of games in teaching Dolch basic sight words had a positive impact on the word recognition level of the learners. The level of word recognition increased when the pre-and post-test data were compared.
