Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Reading is a daily activity that primarily aims to understand the symbols, calculate things, and use it by an individual in terms of his or her needs. The research study entitled "Ang Pag-unawa sa Binasa at Akademikong Pag-unlad ng mga Mag-aaral sa Ikaanim na Baytang" intended to gather information regarding the correlation between the level of reading and academic performance in Filipino subject.

METHODS

The type of research used for this study is descriptive-correlational research. This is concerned with the conditions of relationship that exist; practices that prevail; beliefs and processes that are on-going; effects that are being felt or trends that are developing between the two variables, the independent variable, and the dependent variable. Using the fishbowl technique, the students were picked and asked with the given questions arranged by the researchers that are divided into two parts: the first part and second part which is the demographic profile of the respondents and the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) test respectively. To determine if there is a relationship between the level of reading and the academic performance of the students, the Pearson correlation coefficient formula was used.

RESULTS

Since the recomputed value of -0.010 and the p-value is 0.936, the interpretation of the result is negative low correlated. For this, it states that it must accept the null hypothesis and determine that there is no significant relationship between the two variable.

DISCUSSIONS

Based on the result, the data shows no significant relationship between the two variables. In relation to this, the researchers still recommend giving the students more time, specifically giving a whole period in reading to improve their reading comprehension. Also, the researchers recommended giving more reading materials to help the students, especially in Filipino subject.
