INTRODUCTION
Writing is one of the macro skills that students must develop to achieve holistic learning. It is true that one of the challenges faced by the teachers is the insufficient mastery of the students in this learning aspect. One of the manifestations that the student possess this writing skill is the effective use of grammar associated with linguistic competence. Nordquist (2016) cited that linguistic competence is the unconscious knowledge of grammar that allows the speaker to use and understand language. Furthermore, this study focuses on how the linguistic competence of students greatly affects their writing skills. It aims to assess the linguistic competence of grade 12students in a public secondary school. It aims to determine the level of linguistic competence of the students from the different strands and identify the significant difference between their levels of competence. Moreover, a writing supplement was the proposed material to be produced in this study.
METHODS
This study made use of descriptive-analytic research design. Using the random sampling technique, the respondents are 120 students, 30 students per strand (ABM, STEM, TVL HUMSS). A teacher-made multiple choice test consisting of 25 items was the instrument used to gather the necessary responses. The test question was used to determine the linguistic competence of the students coming from the four strands. This employed the two-way ANOVA to determine if there are significant differences between the linguistic competence of the students per strands.
RESULTS
The results showed that students under STEM, ABM, and HUMSS have a very satisfactory level of linguistic competence. The TVL students need assistance and improvement in terms of proper use of grammar. With this result, there is a significant difference between the levels of linguistic competence of the students.
DISCUSSIONS
The results suggested that students under the TVL strand must be intensively taught of grammar through the use of different writing aids. Though these courses mainly focus on the hands-on experience of the student, students must be taught and equipped with the competence they need for holistic learning. It can be improved if the grammar awareness of students will be enhanced through the use of different writing supplements that will help them master the proper use of grammar. The linguistic competence of the students must be enhanced to achieve the skills needed in their future life.
