Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The importance of establishing a particular knowledge in mathematics is one of the focuses of the Department of Education, especially on how it is perceived as generated and learned, and its impact upon pupils' learning. Some children need to be taught to develop links between known number facts and derived facts. In developing strategies, teaching needs to attend to the structure of number operations as much as to the structure of numbers. While teachers' classroom practices in teaching mathematics were discussed in this study, it is the numeracy knowledge of pupils in mathematics that was the focus of this research. This study analyzed gathered data on the numerical difference among Batangas City East Elementary School pupil’s performance in the administrations of 2016-2017 Project All Numerates Test on three different periods within the start, middle, and end of the school year.

METHODS

This research is descriptive in nature. Descriptive design is used because this study aims to provide an accurate description of a situation or an association between variables from which one can make some statements about a certain group or population. Accuracy and reliability become important considerations. This is also a deductive mode of research in a quantitative study.

RESULTS

Based on the findings presented, becoming numerate is a social activity based on interactions with others. Pupils learn by being challenged and struggling to overcome difficulties. The significant difference between the start of the school year with the end of the school year only shows that becoming numerate enhances as the pupils acquire basic to complicated mathematical ideas. Pupils have calculating strategies but the teacher has the responsibility in helping them refine their methods. Pupil's strategies in calculating are important but they need to learn standard procedures to progress in this knowledge.

DISCUSSIONS

Research which will focus on what it is to be a numerate pupil is recommended. Another supporting research which will identify the beliefs about the best and effective way on how to teach pupils to practically become numerate is highly recommended. Using the devised action plan for Remedial Teaching in Mathematics, that would help improve the mathematical performance of the Non-Numerates Grade I-VI pupils of Batangas City East Elementary School.
