An Overtune to Hygiene and Sanitation: Maximizing Pupils' Awareness at Mabini Central School

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Hygiene and sanitation come along with environmental concern. The limited access to food and safe water was encountered and experienced by the selected learners of Mabini Central School. From the observation, a study was conducted to find out the pupils' awareness of hygiene and sanitation and how this would be maximized. The researcher also wanted to determine the difficulties encountered by pupils on hygiene and sanitation in the school. This study aims to come up with a proposed plan of activities for addressing and improving them in the most flexible and meaningful way.

METHODS

The research participants of this study were 80 pupils from Mabini Central School, Mabini District. The weighted mean was also used to quantify the awareness of hygiene and sanitation as well as the difficulties encountered by these pupils. The data gathered from the respondents were given weights ranging from a 1-4 scale with one as the lowest and four as the highest value. This quantitatively measured the extent of the pupils' awareness of hygiene and sanitation.

RESULTS

Based on the results and discussions, it was recommended that a proposed plan of activities is considered in maximizing pupil’s awareness on hygiene and sanitation and that action research is conducted to ensure an excellent implementation of a proper hygiene and sanitation plan. To improve or maximize the pupils’ awareness of proper hygiene and sanitation, the following plan of activities are suggested: holding a seminar on the "Effect of Proper Hygiene and Sanitation"; conducting a film viewing to help them realize the importance of the good health; participating in the observance of different school celebrations and activities such as poster making, slogan making, poem recitation, essay writing and search; tapping other; stakeholder for hygiene kits and facilities for hand washing and posting or giving flyers to the barangay community.

DISCUSSIONS

The results demonstrated the need to maximize the pupils’ awareness of hygiene and sanitation for a healthier and safer environment. The pupils’ good hygiene and sanitation will surely give positive effects to them. Parents and teachers are always behind their children’s development in terms of proper hygiene and sanitation. An implementation of a proposed plan of activities will strengthen the awareness of pupils in proper hygiene and sanitation. Further research on the same topic must be conducted to sustain proper hygiene and sanitation
