Common Problems in Senior High School

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The low academic performance of secondary school students in many public schools could be traced to insufficient school facilities. Improvements definitely require financial costs but the benefits of such investments often surpass their fiscal costs. The City Schools Division of Cabuyao is determined to improve the facilities of its schools through the help of the city government. The City of Cabuyao is a highly-industrialized city because of the presence of industries such as Nestle Philippines, Wyeth, and Lazada in its locality.

METHODS

Participants in this research were the 50 senior high schools (SHS) teachers of District V-B of the City Schools Division of Cabuyao during the school year 2018-2019. The descriptive method of research was used. A survey-questionnaire prepared by the researcher and validated by the Division Research Coordinator was distributed to the 50 SHS teachers. The survey-questionnaires were retrieved and responses were tallied. The percentage of the frequency of responses and the weighted arithmetic mean (WAM) of each indicator were computed and interpreted in determining the level of compliance of SHS on facility requirements.

RESULTS

The highest level of compliance for these schools is on the School Frontage, incurring an overall mean of 3.10 and verbally interpreted as compliant. Whereas, the lowest level of compliance is found in the Guidance Office, incurring an overall mean of 1.77 and verbally interpreted as uncertain. These are followed by the Administrative Rooms, with an overall mean of 3.06 and interpreted as compliant; the Instructional Rooms, with an overall mean of 2.94 and interpreted as compliant; the School Canteen, with an overall mean of 2.70 and interpreted as compliant; the Computer Laboratory, with an overall mean of 2.55 and interpreted as compliant. These were followed by six remaining indicators in which respondents assessed as uncertain: the Library, with a mean of 2.47; HE/TLE Laboratory, with a mean of 2.45; the Science Laboratory, with a mean of 2.37; Comfort Rooms, with a mean of 2.27; Emergency Exits, with a mean of 2.15; and the School Clinic, with a mean of 1.92.

DISCUSSIONS

Among the twelve (12) facilities under study, the Senior High Schools (SHS) are compliant on the following five major facilities: School Frontage, Instructional Rooms, Computer Laboratory, Administrative Rooms, and School Canteen. Respondents are uncertain on the compliance level of the Science Laboratory, Library, HE/TLE Laboratory, Guidance Office, Clinic, Comfort Rooms, and Emergency Exits. In its three years of operation, the school still needs to improve its facilities. A Capability-Building Seminar must be provided to the school heads to assist them in complying with the availability of the school facilities.
