An Assessment of the Vocabulary Skills of Grade 11 Senior High School Students of Naic National High School-Satellite

INTRODUCTION
Since time immemorial, it has been every English teacher's goal to help students achieve a high quality of learning by strengthening their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing skills. These skills are expected to improve as students advance to a higher-grade level. In this study, the researcher focused on determining the improvement of the vocabulary skills of the grade eleven students over the years and in investigating the differences of the students’ vocabulary skills depending on their chosen strand.
METHODS
This research employed the descriptive research design since it aimed to describe the vocabulary skills of the 165 grade eleven students in Naic National High School-Satellite. A standardized multiple-choice vocabulary test was administered to the respondents to determine the level of their vocabulary skills. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used for statistical analysis of the data. It will be used for in analyzing the existence of a significant difference between the level of the student's vocabulary in connection to their chosen strand. The data was calculated online and was interpreted for devising recommendations.
RESULTS
The Grade 11 Senior High School students were identified possessing poor vocabulary skills regardless of their chosen strand. This indicates that they are having difficulties understanding and using English as their second language. Furthermore, this can eventually lead to difficulties in the five aspects of communication and language skills in their second language -reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. It was also found out that there is no significant difference among the students' vocabulary level in reference to their chosen strand.
DISCUSSIONS
The results of the study clearly show the great need to develop programs that will improve the vocabulary skills of the learners. Students will have a hard time performing in English and in subjects taught in English if their vocabulary skills will not be given proper attention. By elevating the students’ vocabulary skills, their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing skills will definitely improve as well.
