An Analysis of Parents' Lack of Participation in School Activities
Keywords:
Parents' Lack of ParticipationAbstract
INTRODUCTION
Parents' involvement in a child's education is consistently found to have a positive association with a child's academic performance. However, there has been a little investigation of the mechanisms that explain this association. The present study examines two potential mechanisms of this association: the child's perception of cognitive competence and the quality of the student-teacher relationship. A multiple mediation model indicated that a child's perception of cognitive competence fully mediated the relation between parent involvement and the child's performance on a standardized achievement test. The quality of the student-teacher relationship fully mediated the relation between the parent’s involvement and the teacher ratings of the child's classroom academic performance.
METHODS
The descriptive method of research was used with questionnaires as the main instrument for gathering the needed data. On the other hand, frequency and percentage were used in data analysis.
RESULTS
Respondents stated that their main reason for not attending school activities is because they are busy with work. They also said that for parents to attend school activities, continuous motivation must be given. Respondents believed that their children will develop a lack of interest in studying if they do not attend school activities. Meanwhile, half of the respondents agreed that a harmonious relationship between them and the teachers will develop if the former will participate in school activities. On the other hand, majority of the respondents agreed that their lack of participation in school activities will lead to their children's' poor academic performance.
