INTRODUCTION
The research explored on Action Program towards Improving the Reading Proficiency of Grade 5 Pupils. Specifically, the objectives of this study aimed to know the profile of the pupil-respondents as to their age, gender, general average in Grade 4, parents' educational attainment, proficiency level in terms of specific reading comprehension skills, proficiency level in specific reading comprehension skills and how these personal factors significantly relate to the implications of the reading program.
METHODS
This study used descriptive research design to record, describe, and interpret data on the action program towards the improvement of reading proficiency of Grade V pupils.
RESULTS
Based on the findings of the study, it revealed that the respondents have an age range of 10 to 11 years old. The general average of the grade five pupils performed fair on the school year 2017-2018 which means that there was a need for improvement on their performance. The class proficiency level was under frustration.
DISCUSSIONS
These were the recommendations of the researchers to improve the reading comprehension ability of the pupils: select texts purposefully to support comprehension development; teach students to identify and use the text's organizational structure to comprehend, learn, and remember content; guide students through focused, high-quality discussions on the meaning of the text. We made a reading program entitled Project CRIP (Comprehension and Reading Improvement of Pupils) aimed to develop their reading comprehension. The unique feature of this study was the implementation of the reading program to spark the interest of the pupils to read and understand, eventually improving their reading comprehension.
