INTRODUCTION
Food and nutrition are essential factors for human development. Schools, in particular, are required not only to feed the mind and soul but also the body requisite towards holistic education. Therefore, school canteens play an important role in the daily lives of students. However, issues on availability and affordability arise with recurring socio-economic problems within the community and family. In response, this study aims to assess the perception of selected students toward the affordability of goods sold in the school canteens of General Mariano Alvarez Technical High School.
METHODS
The study follows a descriptive quantitative research format. Data gathering was done thru a 15-item survey form which was accomplished by 200 Grade 10 students of GMATHS selected using the stratified sampling technique. Analysis and interpretation of data were done statistically thru percentage, weighted mean and z-tests.
RESULTS
The research has found out that student allowances cannot sustain all immediate wants and needs students to encounter at school. The school canteen's goods sold are considered as " ̃affordable' as perceived by the respondents if only there are no intervening factors such as availability of goods, its quality and price charge; the amount of the students’ allowance; and consumer satisfaction. Moreover, affordability of the products offered by the canteen is heavily influenced by their individual allowances.
DISCUSSIONS
The findings of this study have emphasized the significance of financial management in all aspects, especially on students. The research also suggests minor improvements on the canteen’s offered services. Setting-up menu boards indicating the price lists of food and other products and including healthier food options were also highly recommended.
