Addition Skills of Grade I Pupils at Miguel Aranda Memorial Elementary School: Enhanced through Drills and Exercise

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Addition is the term used to describe adding two or more numbers together. It cannot be denied that problem-solving is an important part of Mathematics education. Mathematics, in general, is an important subject because of its practical role to a person and to society as a whole. However, before a student can successfully solve a problem, he has to possess good analytic and computational skills. Solving Math problems entails or requires that students apply skills. In the school of the study, the pupils in grade one are totally poor in addition but not all have the same attitude towards it. Some love addition because they are happy in answering the problems.

METHODS

The researchers used three data gathering procedures namely, focus group discussion, testing and interview. Also, they used the following data gathering tools -checklist,teacher-made test, and open-ended questionnaire -to attain the objectives of this study.

RESULTS

Results show that the majority of the respondents need scaffolding techniques in addition. The respondents’ willingness to involve themselves in the action mathematics program is highlighted in this study. The data show that there is a need to design an action research writing program for scaffolding the addition skills of the learners.

DISCUSSIONS

The researcher gave the proposed supplementary activities to enhance the addition skills of the pupils.
