Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Problem-solving is an essential skill that will prepare students to adapt to the rapidly changing world. However, pupils find problem-solving assessments in the form of word problems difficult. Despite the efforts of the teachers to thoroughly discuss using a multitude of examples, there remain some barriers that make problem-solving relatively challenging to learn. Thus it pushed the researcher to conduct research on activity guides that will help enhance pupils' skills in problem-solving in Mathematics.

METHODS

The descriptive method of research was utilized in this study. A researcher-made questionnaire was the main data-gathering instrument and it was complemented with interviews and focus group discussions. The respondents were 120 grade V pupils. The weighted mean and standard deviation were utilized as statistical tools to treat the gathered data.

RESULTS

The challenges encountered by the pupils in problem-solving were minimized using different activity guides where pupils were able to perceive or approach the problem in a different way with the assistance of the teacher. Differentiated activity guides enhanced an idea or concept by adding details that will help bring the idea to life and create a better understanding and appreciation among grade V pupils.

DISCUSSIONS

Difficulties in solving word problems in Mathematics can be improved with proper selection of activities that integrate ideas or develop solutions that are exceptionally clear, cohesive and coherent to pupils. Varied approaches to the problems must be utilized to assist pupils to develop their creative thinking skills in problem-solving.
