INTRODUCTION
This project was undertaken to improve the reading achievement in English of Grade 7 students in Bulacnin Integrated National High School during the school year 2017-2018. Based on the results of 2017 Phil-IRI Pretest administered to the Grade 7 students of Bulacnin Integrated NationalHigh School, 69 out of 349 or 19.77% of Grade 7 students belonged to the Frustration level.
METHODS
Following the continuous improvement process, the project proponent conducted a root cause analysis of the problem. Two of the main reasons for the sub par performance of the students in reading revealed in the study were limited vocabulary and parents' apathetic attitude to their children's reading ability.
RESULTS
After obtaining the root cause of the problem, the researcher chose the students from Grade 7-H as the target population since it was the group with the highest number of students in the frustration level of the Phil-IRI assessment. Based on the gathered data, 15 out of 42 or 35.71% of Grade H students belong to the Frustration level. The root cause analysis of the problem revealed that the unfamiliarity of words was the main reason for the reading difficulties of the said students, thus a compilation of reading remediation materials that target this difficulty was prepared by the researcher. The compiled materials were used during the reading remediation session which was done for an hour every day for three months. Also, a monitoring checklist was sent to the parents of the students to ensure that there was also a follow-up at home.
The result of the reading remediation showed a remarkable improvement in the reading achievement of the students. Subject teachers were interviewed and they all affirmed the positive effect of the remediation to the students.
