Accuracy and Speed, Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension Using Gates Mac-Ginitie Standardized Reading Test among Grade 11 Students of Carmona Senior High School

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The outcome of the examination and researches conducted about reading and how people learn to process textual information have contributed theories about the best methods in developing reading skills. This study aimed to obtain the accuracy, speed, vocabulary, and reading comprehension using the Gates Mac-Gintie Standardized Test among the Grade 11 students of Carmona Senior High School.

METHODS

The study utilized the descriptive-correlation method of research to assess the Accuracy and Speed, Vocabulary, and Reading Comprehension among Grade 11 students of Carmona Senior High School. A descriptive type of research is a design which aims to describe the nature of a situation as it exists at the time of phenomenon (Bermudo et al., 2009). The sample size is supported by Calderon (2003); he was of the opinion that 20 percent of the total population is acceptable. To improve the reliability and validity of the research instrument, the test was pilot-tested on a similar but smaller group from different grade levels during the second semester of the 2017-2018 academic year.

RESULTS

Based on the data gathered and results obtained, the researcher came up with the following findings: the majority of the respondents are independent in terms of accuracy and speed, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. The computed p-value of 0.000 was obtained in accuracy to vocabulary, accuracy to reading comprehension and vocabulary to reading comprehension which was lower than 0.01 level of significance. This showed that there was a significant relationship between accuracy and vocabulary, accuracy and reading comprehension together with vocabulary and reading comprehension.

DISCUSSIONS

The results signified that there is a need to develop an action plan that will sustain the accuracy and speed, vocabulary and reading comprehension using Gates Mac-Ginitie Standardized Reading Test among Grade 11 students of Carmona Senior High School.
