Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study focuses on the academic performance of the pupils whose parents are working abroad. The study was conducted with the hope of giving a significant contribution to the educational development of OFW children in Sto. Tomas North Central School. Through the school administrators, the result of this study may become the basis for designing relevant programs for OFW children such as counseling, tutorials, and the like. For the left-behind parents, programs like training seminars can help them learn the rules and responsibilities for nurturing their children as this has a great bearing on their academic performance.

METHODS

A multiple method design was used. 55 grade six pupils whose parents are working abroad were chosen as respondents. Data gathering methods were used, where the data were tallied, tabulated, computed, analyzed and interpreted in the context of the statement of the problem. In the data analysis plan, statistical procedures were used in analyzing and interpreting the data gathered from the respondents.

RESULTS

The academic performance of pupils whose parents are working abroad during the first quarter was 64% and it is rated as satisfactory, 27% belonged to very satisfactory, 5% belonged to outstanding, and 4%belonged to fairly satisfactory. The result revealed that the most number of pupils whose parents are working abroad performed their academic performance at a satisfactory level. The pupils with parents working abroad are almost evenly distributed. It is now ordinary for the society that a family has a parent or both parents working abroad. The mean of respondents’ weighted average is 83.36 with a descriptive equivalent of "satisfactory" which means that they need reinforcement to encourage them to achieve higher academic grades.

DISCUSSIONS

The results of the study indicated that active involvement of parents in the education of their children, in general, yielded relevant students’ achievement outcome, learning and success, cognitive development, better emotional adjustment, better communication, and social skills. The researchers proposed a plan of action to improve the pupils academic performance with the following objectives: (1) to promote camaraderie among pupils and to develop teachers’ skills as counselors in the classroom, (2) for parents/guardians to become aware of their importance in the effective and efficient learning of their children and to build an effective parent-school relationship.
