INTRODUCTION
Overseas Filipino Workers were recently called the nation's Bagong Bayani. This is to honor their sacrifices to provide a better life for their families left in the Philippines. Despite these recognitions, OFWs and their families still encounter a lot of problems. The distance between the parents and their children created gaps in their relationships. This paper aims to determine the academic performance of Grade 9 students of GFLMNHS with OFW parents. Based on Dr. Violeta Bautista’s article, “The Problem of Estrangement among OFW Children", OFW parents do not consider the consequences of their relationship with their children when deciding to work abroad or not most of the time. It is for this reason that the researcher conducted action research to find out the implications of having an OFW parent to the academic performance of the students.
METHODS
The respondents of this study were select 41 Grade 9 students from Gov. F. Leviste Memorial National High School for the SY 2017 2018 whose parents are working abroad regardless of the country where they are working and the nature of their job. Survey questionnaires were the main data-gathering instrument to find out the problems encountered by the students whose parents are OFW. To provide answers to the research questions presented, the descriptive method was employed for gathering the needed data. The results were tabulated and computed using the most appropriate statistical tool.
RESULTS
It was evident that most OFW are caregivers, 15 out of 41, thus the majority of them were mothers who were supposed to be at home to take care of their children. It is for this reason that most students experience being alone especially during important occasions or school activities where the parents' active participation are mostly needed. It proves that having an OFW parent is a contributory factor to the academic achievement of the students. It reveals that having those problems, their academic performance is hampered and affected.
DISCUSSIONS
The approved action plan will bridge the gap between OFW parents and their children. It will help teachers provide assistance to students and will improve their performance in school. The action plan will be utilized by all teachers of Gov. F. Leviste Memorial National High School. In this simple way, the researcher can help other teachers solve similar problems in their respective school.
