INTRODUCTION
Educators constantly aim for the maximum participation of their students. For this reason, students’ attitude is a great consideration. In the Senior High School, Physical Education teachers can observe the different attitudes of students for the subject which may affect their academic performance. This study uncovers the encountered problems and diverse attitudes of students for the subject and their impact on students’ academic performance. An intervention will be formulated based on the study’s findings and theory.
METHODS
A multiple method design was used. To get the numerical data from the responses of the survey questionnaires, the quantitative method was used. To gather responses from participants through interviews and open-ended questions, a qualitative method was used. Using the descriptive method, the description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of data were made possible.
RESULTS
Majority of the respondents perceived that they had poor Physical Education facilities and equipment. They also perceived that most of their teachers were not Physical Education degree holders and they didn't have enough relevant training towards the subject. On the other hand, students still showed enthusiasm and interest because they felt that; (1) Their teachers showed concern to students who can't perform well in the activities; and (2) They believed that physical education develops their physical, social, and intellectual being. The majority of the respondents had an "outstanding" academic performance. There is a positive significant relationship between the academic performance of the students and their attitudes towards the Physical Education subject.
DISCUSSIONS
Positive attitudes result in the high academic performance of the students. Thus, teachers must be empowered and they must find ways to be more innovative in their methodologies for the Physical Education teaching-learning process. There is a need to craft a plan for providing students with the essential facilities and equipment for their Physical Education class. This will give them a higher quality of learning experience adding to their competence in the global market.
