Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Education is regarded as a promoter of human development and seen by many as the center of any society's life and concern. It contributes to the social, cultural, political and economic welfare and development of citizens (Mhauli and MolokoMphale, 2014). Academic expectations of parents may lead to depression, lack of independence and alcohol abuse among their children. It can also develop insecurity, self-centeredness and poor academic performance. The researchers conducted this research to determine the reasons for parents’ expectations in terms of the academic performance of their children. This research aims to seek information on how these expectations affect parent-child relationships and their effects on the child's academic performance.

METHODS

The convergence of parallel mixed method design was used in the study. Using the pragmatic approach, the researcher used a researcher-made questionnaire and face-to-face interviews with the subjects. Fifty students responded to a set of structured questions and fifty parents responded to a set of semi-structured questions.

RESULTS

The fifty student-respondents perceived problems in meeting the academic expectations of their parents which emanated mostly from being afraid of getting lower grades and fear of disappointing them. Also, it was found out from the fifty parents that most of them were disappointed whenever their child gets low grades because they expect more from what they can give.

DISCUSSIONS

The results show that most parents had expectations from their children and most of these students did not meet these expectations. To address the problem, activities and programs for students and parents were proposed to help students cope with the challenges of academic expectations and, at the same time, improve their relationship with their parents.
