Academic Development in Campus Journalism: Basis for Communication Class Culminating Activity SY 2018-2019

INTRODUCTIONThis study conceptualized the need for values formation among student journalists, honing their personal skills such as time management, commitment to work, self-determination, willingness to work with others, leadership, and ethical media practice while developing their communication skills in an environment that will sustain learning.METHODSThis action research used an assessment of the performance of Bukal National High School in terms of Campus Journalism. For the data gathering, a self-made instrument which was tested, validated and administered tothe student journalists. The results were computed, tallied, and interpretedRESULTSThe student-journalists had a very high involvement in campus journalism based on these mean responses: 3.64 in attending training, 3.54 in exerting effort to win individual awards in campus journalism, 3.52 for Time Management, 3.46 for Commitment to work, 3.46 for knowing the importance of the quality of work, and 3.78 in Social Development or Willingness to Work with Others manifested among students having fun working with other co-staffers. In Leadership, the highest mean of 3.66 showed a very high extent effect among student journalists who revealed respect to the person occupying the highest position in the campus school paper organization. In Ethical Media Usage/Practices, the highest mean of 3.66 shows a very high extent effect among the student journalist activities which reveals having respect to the protocol of "virtual groups." In Writing Skills and Oral skills, the highest mean of 3.76 shows a very high extent effect which reveals their persistence for enriching their vocabulary skills through writing activities and in being more active during forums or class discussions based on the mean of 3.52.DISCUSSIONSParticipation to campus journalism has a very high extent effect in the personal, social and academic development of the students thus, the eight (8) culminating online classes are designed for aspiring Campus Journalists to become more skilled writers and critics in the different areas of journalism. The students will attend classes online using the social media closed group. Their writings will be observed based on the technicalities for each category prescribed by the campus journalism standard. The school must support campus journalism activities, provide intensive training to help students become knowledgeable and competent in the performance of tasks.
