Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The study sought to investigate the relationship of the abstract reasoning ability and the academic achievement of Grade One pupils of Kaytitinga Elementary School as the basis for their enhancement activities.

METHODS

The study utilized the descriptive analysis with the use of the standardized Psychological Test Raven's Progressive Matrices. The academic achievement of 122 Grade One pupils was obtained from the result of their second quarter examination.

RESULTS

The abstract reasoning level of the pupils of based on the mean score obtained from the Raven's Progressive Matrices administered and data collected was average. The result means they are intellectually average or they have a moderate capacity to apprehend meaningless figures presented for their observation at the time the test was administered. The nature of the figure completing each system of relations was presented and by so doing, they can develop a systematic method of reasoning.

DISCUSSIONS

The level of academic achievement of Grade One pupils was approaching proficiency which means that the pupils at this level developed approaching proficiency; this level involves developed fundamental knowledge, skills and core understanding. With a little guidance from the teacher and or with some assistance from peers, they can transfer these understandings through authentic performance tasks. On the basis of the findings, an enrichment class program has been prepared for implementation.
