Abstract

INTRODUCTION

It is the aim of Gaudencio B. Lontok Memorial Integrated School, to lessen, if not eradicate, absenteeism among its students. One way of addressing this problem is to identify the causes of truancy. Once they are singled out, understood, and analyzed, these issues may be addressed with specific actions and measures. This will eventually result in the better performance of the students, teachers, and the school in general.

METHODS

It is in this context that this action research was undertaken, that is, to identify the causes of why the grade VI pupils in this school absent themselves from their classes. This study used the descriptive survey method. A questionnaire was used to determine the causes of absenteeism among the students where they rated each situation/reason/cause presented.

RESULTS

Among individual reasons, illness gained the highest weighted mean of 4.60 and has the most significant effect on the absence of the pupils. Lack of care for the child from the family gained a weighted mean of 3.93. The least was "Bad habits (drug use, etc.)" with a weighted mean of 1.07.

DISCUSSIONS

It was found that students who cannot maintain good relationships with their friends, teachers, and managers, who do not like the school and the subjects have a higher tendency to be absent from school and to drop out of school. Among individual reasons, illness is the factor that has the most significant effect on absence.
