Abstract

INTRODUCTION

School attendance is a baseline factor in determining a student's success. Making it a priority, students will be allowed to have positive grades. It also develops healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior, and have a better chance of fulfilling their goal of finishing their studies. Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways to prepare the child for success" both in school and in life. However, frequent absences of students might lead to negative consequences rooting from different influences. School refusal behavior of students has become highly problematic, thus tracing the current social climates was be done.

METHODS

The study used the descriptive method with a constructed questionnaire as the primary data gathering instrument to determine the current social climate conditions. Frequent absent students were identified using the attendance notebook and SF2 of the adviser. Twenty students served as respondents of the study. The attendance of the identified students was traced from grade 7 to grade 9 based on the attendance and SF2. The statistical tools used were the ranking and weighted mean. The ranking was used to determine which among the social climates influenced the absences of students. Weighted mean was used to determine the highest reason for each social climate.

RESULTS

Selected 20 frequently absent students of Grade 10 in the SY 2017-2018 for the last three years noted a rate 0f 65.5%. This value did not meet the passing rate of 75%. From thorough readings and researches, this study gathered three social climates that affect the attendance of students. School got the highest weighted mean of 2.09, which the respondent agreed that affect their attendance. The main reason why they tend to refuse to go to school is rampant bullying inside the classroom with the highest weighted mean of 2.73. The family was the second social climate that affects the attendance of students. It got 2.05 overall weighted mean. Lack of financial support from parents and too many household chores to do were two reasons for their absences. The community was last in rank with 1.47. The distance of the school from the house got 1.91.

DISCUSSIONS

The result depicted a need for a plan of action, precisely the main reason why students tend to absent in school. Bullying is widely recognized as one of the significant factors in student's attendance and academic performance. Making them feel safe in school is the most powerful way to prepare the child for success" both in school and in life.
