A Study of TLE Performance of the Grade Six Pupils at Calumpang East Elementary School: Basis for Enhancement Strategies

INTRODUCTION
Through this study, the researcher wishes to enhance the performance level of the Grade Six pupils in TLE at Calumpang East Elementary School. On its first year of implementation, it has met problems on the performance level of the pupils. Throughout the previous curriculum, TLE was taught as EPP, which used Filipino as a medium of instruction. The researcher has found that some factors affect the performance level of the pupils since it is only in its first year of curriculum implementation wherein English is the medium of instructions. The last mentioned is one of the reasons why teaching TLE among Grade Six pupils need focal attention in every child's learning process.
METHODS
The study adopted a qualitative approach using a descriptive survey to assess the status of the performance level of the Grade Six Pupils in TLE at Calumpang East Elementary School. It allows the researcher gathered information, summarized, presented and interpreted for clarification.
RESULTS
During the first quarter of the school year, the researcher found out that the grade six class got a low MPS. The result of the First Periodical Test in TLE VI showed that only 20 out of 41 pupils, which is 48.78 % of the class passed the test. It resulted in a Mean of37.51, SD of 2.64 and the MPS of 75.02%After the implementation of the study, the result was evaluated through the second periodical test result. This stated that there was a significant increase in the number of pupils who got 75% and above passing grade. It raised from 21 pupils to 28 pupils, which are 17.07% of the enrolment higher as compared to the first quarter. It resulted in a mean of 42.95, SD of 6.71, and an MPS of 85.90%.
DISCUSSIONS
The teacher found difficulties in teaching TLE. She used lectures and some group activities. The pupils also met difficulties in learning the skills. Lack of comprehension skills of the English language made them uninterested with the lesson. Inadequate learning materials and references were a significant hindrance. Practical application was not made because of the unavailability of materials. There were enhancement strategies used that helped the Grade Six pupils raised their performance level. These were the following: Reading comprehension exercises; They are attending training/seminars of teachers on varied experiential learning, application of pedagogical approaches, learning by doing with complete instructional/learning materials, and using modern technology in gathering references.
