INTRODUCTION
Reading plays a vital role in every individual. As we grew old, some people judged us according to our reading ability. That is why teachers always gave their best and made pupils a good reader. During the Pre-Test that was conducted on July 2017, the Consolidated Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Oral and Silent Reading-English) of Grade V-Lawaan class has resulted in having more pupils under FrustrationLevel. This is very alarming because most of the pupils belong to Frustration Level; if this will not be addressed soon, it will create numerous problems as to their reading performance. Thus, the intervention A SMILE (A Story Moves and Intensifies Learning with Excitement) was made.
METHODS
A SMILE (A Story Moves and Intensifies Learning with Excitement) is a study that focused on engaging pupils in daily reading activities. This is done in the morning and the afternoon before the class started from July 2017 to February 2018. The study lasted for 7 (seven) months within the School Year 2017-2018.
RESULTS
The study implied that the more they are engaged in reading, the lesser the number of pupils under Frustration Level fall. The pupils under FrustrationLevel decreased, and it was added to the next level, which was under Instructional and Independent Level. Results showed that there was a decreased of the number of pupils under Frustration Level from 16 pupils down to 9 (nine) pupils after the intervention A SMILE (A Story Moves and Intensifies Learning with Excitement).
DISCUSSIONS
Based on the research conducted, it is suggested by the researcher that reading most of the time is necessary and must be applied in the classroom every day. There is a great help of reading the different materials available in the classroom such as books, storybooks, passages, magazines, newspapers, Bible, and other printed materials.
