Revisiting Facebook Interaction: Pupils' Social Collaboration with Peers through Social Networking among Grade Six Pupils of Bulihan Elementary School

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Technology significantly affects the ways of living in society and social interaction. The means of communication are more accessible because of social networking sites. This study focused on the collaboration that is happening through social networking sites, specifically Facebook. It also sought to gather the perceptions of the users regarding their communication with peers and how it affects their behavior.

METHODS

This is descriptive qualitative research which used Grade VI pupils who were regularly using the said application. The tools being used to gather data are survey questionnaire and interview sheets. The frequency of Facebook users in the school was high in Grade VI; that is why they were ones chosen for this study. Those who have Facebook accounts among the grade above level were only the selected qualified respondents.

RESULTS

The results showed that the respondents were active users of social media since they frequently visit their account in a week. The cited reasons for using it are to gain friends, to react on some posts, to share interesting links, and also to chat with their friends. From the interview conducted, it was found that the respondents used Facebook because they felt very loved when people reacted to their post. They want to notify their friends and keep update to them. However, the respondents also mentioned that the app could harm them in many ways, which triggered fear and embarrassment for some reasons.

DISCUSSIONS

The study wanted to grab the attention of the million users of Facebook to be responsible users by thinking things before posting anything on social media. Responsible users must know when to talk and when not to interact with people on the said app. Online bashing and bullying are reasons that triggered anxiety and depression, which should be given with emphasis. Conducting way on how to be protected in using the application is a great help to avoid being in a difficult situation.
