Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The efficiency and effectiveness of instructional materials in the teaching-learning process must be considered. Textbooks being one of the most commonly used instructional materials of the learners must be aligned with the competencies of K to 12 curriculum. It must be ensured that what a teacher teaches should be aligned with the standards and competencies set by the specific subject area. Students will not be able to acquire the skills and knowledge expected to them if the learning competencies do not coincide with the curriculum guide issued by Department of Education. The purpose of this study is to examine the alignment of the Practical Research 1 book used by the Senior High School Department of Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU)-Batangas with the K to 12 curriculum. Moreover, the study aims to design and develop a module that aligns with the content standards and learning competencies for students to achieve what is expected at the end of the course. The findings of the study indicate that there are misalignments between what is written in the curriculum guide ofDepartment of Education and what is proposed in the textbook and executed at the instructional level.

METHODS

The research design employed was descriptive and qualitative analysis to analyze the learning competencies of Practical Research 1 book. The study was generally based on a social constructivism perspective. Three (3) experts from LPU-Batangas served as the respondents. They were chosen using purposive sampling. The instrument used in gathering data was an adapted evaluation form from the Nevada Department of Education. The evaluation form used the 4-point Likert scale to measure the experts' assessment in each criterion. The data gathered had been treated with the use of simple statistics such as mean, most frequent (mode), percentage, and percentage agreement.

RESULTS

Findings showed that there is an imbalance in the content alignment of the book being evaluated and what is incorporated in the K to 12 curriculum. The material should focus on the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) appropriate to the grade level to attain what is expected among the learners.

DISCUSSIONS

Revisions on the content and general assessment structure are suggested. A module must be developed and implemented to align the intended outcomes and assessment of what is being set by the K to 12 Curriculum. The researcher calls for further analysis or investigation about content alignment of Practical Research 1 book.
