A Reading Habit Among Grade Three Pupils of Alfonso Central School and How it Affects their Level of Reading Comprehension

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Reading is the cornerstone of education and the foundation of lifelong learning. The primary purpose of this research was to assess the pupils' reading habit and its correlation to their reading comprehension.

METHODS

The respondents of the study were the 40 Grade three Sampaguita pupils of AlfonsoCentral School for the SY 2016-2017. In this study, the researchers made use of the descriptive-normative survey and the correlational design with the aid of pupil as informants.

RESULTS

There is an increased in the percentage of pupils who are in independent level from 20% as of October, it increased at 35% at the end of March. An increased of 15% is evident. This also implied that the program for developing reading habit is effective and of great value among our young readers. That the increase in independent level of comprehension was affected by the reading habit formed among the grade three children. Data showed an increased in the percentage of pupils who are under instructional level in reading comprehension. From 28% as of October to 43% in March. This result showed that the 15% increased from the start of the study up to the end of March revealed that the reading habit affect the reading comprehension of the grade three pupils positively. This also showed that there was a decrease in the frustration level and level up to instructional level which is all due to the developing of reading habit among the respondents who are grade three pupils.

DISCUSSIONS

Based on the results of the study the following conclusions were drawn, (1). That the 75% of the grade three pupils enjoy reading which lead them to form a reading habit and at the same time a higher level of comprehension. (2).That the reason why they read is to sharpen their minds and to be smarter. This also concludes that smart pupils are of high level of comprehension. (3). That reading comprehension is affected by reading habit. Reading habit affects reading comprehension positively and is relevant and at the same time significant to reading comprehension
